Bellhop on my iPad

Just a quick doodle to post tonight... By no means amazing. Drew and colored this on my iPad using Sketchbook Pro from my hotel room in Chicago tonight. I used my Pogo Sketch stylus, which made things easier than just using my fingertip. This is the most extensive drawing I've done so far on my iPad. Based on how quickly I was able to do this sketch, I could definitely see myself doing this a lot more often.

Venom Progress

Well, I'm making progress on Venom. Here it is colored with a simple generic background. Let me know what you think of it! I'm hoping to draw a real background to go with it eventually...

Posts will probably be a little spotty for the next week or so. I'm taking a quick trip to Chicago to watch a few Cubs games. That does mean ample time waiting around in airports to get more practice doing quick sketches of people. If I like any of that stuff, maybe I'll post that while I'm on my vacation.

Venom Inked

Got Venom inked tonight. Hope to work on coloring him either tonight or tomorrow. Not completely happy with how the head turned out... Hopefully a little color will help it a bit. Let me know what you think!

Venom and the Mustachioed Man

Couple things to post today... First, here's a sketch I started of Venom based on the semi-recent Spectacular Spider-Man series. Just trying out another style. I'm planning to finish this but wanted to post the work in progress.

Next up is a colored version of the man with the crazy mustache that I posted a while back. I was going through some of the files on my computer and came across this uncolored, having forgotten that I fully intended to come back to it. So, now here it is with a splash of color.

Fat Hockey Player

I know, I know... I said I wasn't sure if I was doing any more "Fat" characters. But they're kind of fun. So I'm thinking maybe doing one a week and posting it. We'll see how it goes. Here, as requested, is Fat Hockey Player, friend to both Fat Viking and Fat Ballplayer.

A couple quickies

Here is a page of quick 3-4 minute sketches I did tonight from news photos I found online. Sorry for the less than stellar photo, but I took it with my iPhone. Hope to have a couple more things colored and posted by the weekend. Let me know what you think!

Daytime doodle from a messy desk

My desk is once again clogged up with random post-its that I have
doodled on while at work. This is what happens when you're waiting
for footage to import. Below the picture of my messy desk is a shot
of something I sketched today. In more exciting news, I got a Wacom
Intuos 4 today which I'm really excited to take home and start drawing
with.

Fat Ballplayer!

Well, Fat Viking now has a companion...  Fat Ballplayer!  Another fun, quick drawing.  There's just something about this that makes me giggle.  Might have to do with the bubblegum.  Not sure if I'm going to do many more of these "Fat" drawings, but you never know.  Let me know what you think!

Agent Orange

There's a great artist by the name of Darren Rawlings who recently started a fanart blog for his Agent Orange character. I love robots as much as the next guy, and I love the characters he has created in the world of Agent Orange, so I decided to throw together my own drawing of AO. So here are both the untouched inks and the final colored version. Let me know what you think!

Fat Viking!

Here's a fat viking I drew and colored yesterday... A bit different style than usual, but I wanted to play around with keeping things simple. I'm thinking I may start doing a whole lineup of characters in this sort of style. It was fun to try something different. Let me know what you think!

Big dumb oaf

Just threw this guy down on paper really fast... Was going to be the first of a page of heads, but instead, I just kept going on the big dumb oaf. Let me know what you think!

Early Sketchbook Pro for iPad attempts

I've started using my iPad to draw using Sketchbook Pro a bit. Definitely still getting used to it... Drawing with your finger isn't quite as easy as one would think. Anyways, here are the first couple quick sketches I tried on here.

More sketches from Vegas

Well, I'm finally back in LA. Didn't have a lot of time for drawing
while in Vegas, but here are a couple more quickies.

Drink and draw in Vegas

I'm in Vegas, and for whatever reason I decided to take my sketchbook
to the Paris bar. Did you know there is currently an Avon convention
going on here? Well, there is. Lots of old ladies, none of which I
drew. Here are some of my quick sketches of bar patrons.

A little collab...

Hey all! You may notice a new header for my blog. Have to give a shout-out to Trevor over at Compose Myself who, while able to write some amazing music, also knows his way around making some badass graphics. I asked him to create something for me, so he made that beautiful baseball-script inspired style. As you can see, my work in progress pitcher that I posted a week ago also made it into the header, finally finished and colored. Also have to credit Trevor with an assist as far as helping me to figure out how to make the pitcher look as good as possible as I was finishing it up.

Below are a couple shots to show how the pitcher got from that sketch I did on Opening Day to the piece that is part of my new header.

Here's the original Opening Day work in progress sketch I posted...

Opening Day sketch, now with ink!

After inking it, I happened to stumble across some drawings on eBay that JJ Kirby had done for Upper Deck (I'm assuming for inclusion in some baseball card set) featuring animated versions of several Yankee players. What really caught my eye was that he had done a much thicker black line as an outline around the players, with thinner interior lines. I decided I wanted to try that style out on my pitcher, hence the fat black sharpie outline after I finished inking.

Here's the final colored pitcher before getting shrunk down to work with the graphic Trevor created.

Saturday sketches

Just a couple things to share today. First, here are a couple 2-3 minute warmup sketches I did earlier in the day.

At the end of the day, spent some time working on this guy, which started taking on a bit of a life of its own and turned into something of a barroom scene, rather than just the guy. Might keep working on this one and see where it goes from here. Let me know what you think!

Just a few more heads...

Spent more time drawing tonight while trying to catch up on a pretty heavy backlog of shows on my Tivo. Here are a few of the heads I came up with (and Batman). Let me know what you think!

Dinner sketches at The Habit

Took my sketchpad along to dinner at The Habit tonight... Once I finished my BBQ chicken salad, I sat there sketching each of the peeps below for a couple minutes apiece, trying to focus less on the details and more on just getting the shapes on the page. They seemed a little once I scanned them in, so I decided to do a quick color job to make 'em pop a bit more. Just shows that everything looks better with a splash of color. Let me know what you think!

Some Marvel characters...

Tonight I got on a kick sketching Marvel characters... It all started with everyone's favorite merc with a mouth, and from there, it was a downward spiral of drawing Deadpool again, then Spidey, then Thor and finally Ghost Rider. Needless to say I got sidetracked from what I was intending to work on tonight. But in the end, I guess even drawing Marvel characters is good exercise. Let me know what you think (and which is your favorite)!

Daytime doodle

Wanted to test out posting from my phone, so here's a quick doodle I did while in a meeting this morning.

It's a trap!

Just a couple sketches to share tonight... Wish there were more hours in the day so that I could spend more time drawing. I'm trying to put in as much time as possible every day, but some days, I just don't have that much time, and today felt like one of those days.

First up, I had to satisfy tonight's urge, which was to draw Admiral Ackbar. God knows why I felt the need to do so, but here he is. Feel pretty 'meh' about the drawing, but Ackbar is always good for a laugh.

Next up, I got in some practice drawing more females. I feel like I'm slowly getting a little better at them, though I'm still not happy. I think the one on the left is definitely one of the better female heads I've drawn lately.

Love that Joker!

Hey all... Left work a little early tonight, so I was able to sit down and get some solid time in with my sketchbook. First I sketched some random heads, as you can see...

And then I got the overwhelming urge to draw the Joker... Don't know why, but here he is. Nothing spectacular but fun. I remember from when I was younger that I've always gotten a lot of enjoyment out of drawing the Joker. Maybe it's that maniacal grin...

Opening Day WIP

Happy Opening Day! Yeah, the day is almost over, but it's never too late to celebrate! The opening day of baseball season is probably my favorite day of the year.

Did you know that the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter on Opening Day was Bob Feller back in 1940? Pretty amazing, huh? That little fact served as the inspiration for me tonight. I decided to start drawing a pitcher using Bob Feller's signature high leg kick delivery as a jumping off point. Here's the rough work in progress... Definitely still has some work left to do on it, but for the moment I'm just having fun with it and trying to stylize it a bit now that I've got a rough sketch down. I have to say, it's a lot of fun to draw the old school wool uniform, back when everyone wore it just a little baggier than they do today.

Drawings and iPads and Photoshop, oh my!

Well, it has definitely been a busy weekend... Spent most of the weekend on two different projects, one for work and another for a friend. Now that I have both done, I can finally sit down to enjoy my brand spankin' new iPad. Really looking forward to taking Sketchbook Pro for a test drive on the iPad. I'm hoping that becomes my preferred method for drawing. But enough about my iPad (for now, at least)...

One of the projects I was finishing up this weekend was a title banner for my buddy Trevor's blog Compose Myself. He had asked me to draw him something, and I came up with what I thought was a pretty cool idea. From the first ugly looking sketch on the back of a random piece of paper in his office to the final product, I think this is by far the most that I have drawn and redrawn and redrawn anything before making it to the final product, but I think it was worth it. Below are all of those drawings (except for the very first concept sketch which hopefully made its way to a garbage can)...

Here's my first real attempt to hash out what I was trying to accomplish... Pretty simple. A cartoon-ish version of Trevor with arms spread wide as though he is conducting an orchestra. Once I had that down, I started drawing. Only problem was, I ran out of room in my sketchpad for his right hand. Oops. Time to flip the page in the sketchbook and start again.

On the second attempt, for whatever reason, I apparently didn't think that a head was necessary. started way too close to the spiral of the sketchpad and once realizing this, used it as an opportunity to practice drawing the arms spread wide anyway. The second image on this page is the version that was ultimately used in making the final image, before I inked over the initial blue pencil sketch.

Inked! Now all it needs is some color. Time for a little Photoshop action. And after coloring a few things in Photoshop CS (yes, I know, I'm behind the times), I've decided that I really need to invest in CS5 when it comes out. My computer doesn't like my version of PS very much.

And here's the final version that Trevor has up on his site!

Let me know what you think of it!

Happy Easter, y'all!

Don't feel bad if the Easter bunny doesn't visit you this year... As you can see, he started hitting the flask a little early. Haha. Just some quick fun. Should have something more interesting to post either tomorrow or this weekend.
