Another trip to the zoo...

Here are a few select animal sketches from my latest trip to the LA Zoo, along with a page from my sketchbook from one night at work where I decided to study the gerenuk a bit (quickly becoming a favorite animal to draw for some reason).  Let me know what you think!

Animal Drawing Expedition

Wow!  It has now been just over a year since my last post.  I really need to try doing this more regularly.

I recently embarked on an adventure to try to learn to draw animals.  I've always known that my animal drawing skills were weak at best, without any real understanding of how to properly construct any type of animal.  So when I saw a flyer for an animal drawing workshop taught by David Colman through Motivarti, I jumped at the chance.  The class consisted of one day at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits to study skeletal structures, followed by a day at the Los Angeles Zoo to draw animals from life.  Below are the results from those 2 days of class.  Some of these drawings aren't great (not to mention that the zebras are missing their stripes and the giraffes missing their spots)...  But all were a learning experience.

After a great time in the class, I signed up for a membership to the zoo so that I could go back on my own to practice as much I want throughout the year.

Week 1 (post-class)

I think you can see I'm starting to get at least a little more comfortable drawing animals from life, though some of the drawings still look/feel awkward and clunky.

Week 2 (post-class)

Definitely an improvement on the 2 previous weeks.  I'm also getting more confident sketching with a pen rather than pencil.

Let me know what you think!  And if there's a particular animal you think I should try drawing (or need to practice more), please leave it in the comments below!

Has it really been so long?

I can't believe how long it has been since my last blog post. It is shameful really. And what's funny (or maybe sad) is that I've noticed that the LAST post I made was also a "oops, it's been a long time since I've posted" post. Unfortunately, it has been mostly due to a lack of time with which to draw and create new things worthy of posting. I'm going to try my hardest to get back into it. In the meantime, here are a couple drawings done on post-its at work.

So I guess I haven't posted in a little while...

I realized today that I've neglected to post anything here in quite some time (over a month), so I figured I'd do a quick sketchbook dump from my moleskine that I carry around everywhere. Nothing too fancy, but it's something.

As always, thanks for taking the time to look, and let me know what you think if you're so inclined...

Skulls!

Yep, I drew some Red Skull-ish skulls. Let me know what you think...

Back to basics

Every once in a while, whether it is for lack of inspiration OR because I feel like I'm getting sloppy OR simply to study some great designs, I like to go back and try my hand at copying some established character designs that you'll all recognize. No, it's not original work, but it always helps me in my own drawing to study how these great characters are constructed and get a feel for how their lines flow. Here are a few I've done the past couple days.

Sketchbook page

Here's a page out of my sketchbook from today. Let me know what you think...
